This workshop provides evidence-based information on assessing the parenting capacity of people with learning difficulties in a way that leads to appropriate intervention designed to meet their unique needs and reduce child neglect and recidivism in child protective cases.
Participants will learn about competence-based assessment and intervention practices including a step-by-step pictorial program that has proven effective in helping parents with learning difficulties to successfully acquire and retain parenting skills and which may be used in conjunction with the SafeCare model being piloted in some regions of our state.
Parents with learning difficulties include people who may be labeled as having intellectual disabilities or borderline intellectual functioning or persons with traumatic brain injury. Opportunities to engage in strategic planning towards development of regional child assessment teams will take place on the second day with an opportunity to discuss specific cases.
