ND Conference of Social Welfare 2010 Annual Conference

"Back to the Basics: Connecting Past, Present & Future"

The opening session on Wednesday, September 22, will be a motivational presentation on “Life’s Greatest Moments” by V.J. Smith. This session is sure to entertain and inspire all. Plans are being made for a Foster Parent Training with Charlie Joyce, LICSW, on Wednesday evening.

The General Session on Thursday morning, September 23, will be entitled “The Art of Having Difficult Conversations” presented by staff of the University of North Dakota. Learn how to talk to the difficult people in your life. Tammy Ness, LICSW, from North Central Human Service Center, will be presenting on “Texting and Sexting - Media Impact on Youth”. Other planned topics are “Grief and Loss in Foster Care”, “Transitional Case Management”, “How to Really Listen, “Relatives Raising Children” and “Trafficking of Native American Women”. Job Corp will be providing a full course menu for lunch on Thursday, as well as a tour of the Quentin Burdick Job Corp Center.

Friday morning’s General Session has not yet been determined; however, topics of interest are State Administration of County Social Services, Health Care Reform, and Candidates for the Senate and House seats-What do they have to tell us?

Treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder-Related Nightmares
A seminar for Psychologists, Counselors, Social Workers, Clergy and Therapists

This NDSU seminar will be from 8 am  - 4 pm, at 1919 N University Dr - D104, Fargo. Terrance W. Barrett, PhD., will review the overall experience of PTSD as well as include topics such as: Introduce interaction of traumatic events, intrusive thoughts, flashbacks and nightmares; Discuss the impact of interrupted sleep patterns and unmanaged nightmares; Outline the nature of PDSD-related nightmares in contrast to general nightmares. CEUs have been approved for NBCC counselors and North Dakota social workers. This workshop is 5.5 contact hours. The cost is $99 and includes lunch. Army OneSource has launched a formal campaign to encourage civilian health and behavioral health providers to complete an online course in the series titled, “Treating the Invisible Wounds of War.”  This series of courses was designed to help primary care physicians, case workers, mental health providers, and other professionals - who may see a veteran or family member on an unrelated issue - develop a better understanding of the culture in which Service Members and Veterans ,as well as their families, live and work.  The courses also provide best practices for identifying, assessing, and treating behavioral health problems that result from the trauma of war.

Course Purpose:  This series of courses is designed to build awareness among primary care physicians, case workers, mental health providers, and other professionals (who may see a Veteran or Family Member on an unrelated issue) of the culture in which Veterans and their Families live and work.  The courses provide best practices for identifying, assessing, and treating mental health problems that result from the trauma endured from war.

 

Objectives:  At the conclusion of each of these courses, you should be able to:

• Identify strategies for establishing and maintaining a therapeutic alliance with Combat Veterans and their Families, by examining Military structure and culture, and the combat experience

• Examine the current knowledge of trauma and PTSD and how it is unique to Military personnel

• Identify frames of mental health assessment and treatment options for Military personnel

• Identify how Family relationships are impacted by mobilization, deployment, and redeployment

• Identify services available for Veterans and their Families, including those provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and TRICARE

 

Note: Video portions of these courses may require a high-speed internet connection for optimum effectiveness.

 

Length: Course times vary, and a course does not have to be completed all at one time. Users may log out at any time and start again where they left off.

7/26/10 - 7/29/10 - 2010 ND Children's Justice Symposium

The Children and Family Services Division of the North Dakota Department of Human Services in collaboration with the North Dakota Supreme Court sponsored this conference at the Ramkota Inn in Bismarck.  It was designed to provide training, knowledge and skill development in the areas of safety, permanence and well-being to all professionals across the state working with children and their families. 6/10/10 - 6/11/10 - West River Conference of Social Welfare 2010 Conference

This year's conference was entitled 'Catching up Without Slowing Down' - and it was held in Medora. On June 10th, there were two sessions by Calvin Terrell: Confrontation, Coercion or Collaboration - The art of Disagreeing; Two Wings: Flight and Plight of a Broken Winged Bird. There were also break out sessions on "Current Trends of Youth Drug Use", and "Gangs". On June 11th, there was a presentation by Nancy Sprynczynatyk: Technology and Emotional Stunting/Moral Consequences. Conference details, including registration form can be found here.

5/13/10 - 5/15/10 - Eagala Part 1 Training (Healing Horse Program

This training fulfilled the first part of the Certification process regarding Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP). EAP incorporates horses experientially for emotional growth and learning. It is a collaborative effort between a licensed therapist and a horse professional working with the clients and horses to address treatment goals. Training took place from 8:30 - 5:00 pm each day, and included lunches. 5/11/10 or 5/12/10 - Parenting Expert Jonathon Cloud

The Fort Berthold Juvenile Court, The Gerald Tex Fox Juvenile Corrections, along with Fort Berthold Boys and Girls Club presented a free one-day session featuring Jonathan Cloud, author of Parenting the Guardian Class: Validating Spiritural Youth, Ending Adolescence, and Renewing America's Greatness. Attendance was free and registration forms were available at the Fort Berthold District Court and the Gerald Tex Fox Justice Center. Email requests were welcomed and were sent to Norma Baker. 5/11/10 - How to Get the Most out of Baby Toys

The Human Development and Family Science department at NDSU held this presentation as part of the “Bringing Science to You” series. The presentation was led by Dr. Rebecca Woods, NDSU faculty member. Topics included: What makes a toy “developmentally appropriate”, simple ways for caregivers to assess a baby’s abilities, how to know which toys to avoid, and best practices for real caregivers. 1.25 Contact Hours were approved through NDBSWE.  The point of contact was Beth Salafia (701-231-858). 5/6/10 - NASWND Annual Conference

The NASW North Dakota Chapter held it's Annual Conference at the Radisson Hotel in Fargo. It was a one-day event, with four sessions featuring Jeff Edleson, Ph.D., LICSW, one of the world’s leading authorities on children exposed to domestic violence. 4/19/10 - Stop Violence Conference

The Central Valley Health District SART (Sexual Assault Response Team) presented this free one-day workshop that had sessions related to gender violence, MN & ND human trafficking, and behaviors of sexual predators. It was located in Jamestown, at the Reiland Fine Arts Center on the Jamestown College Campus. Detailed event information was: here. Kali Brue-Lautt and Deb Fischer were the conference coordinators.

4/15 - 4/16 2010 - Assessment & Intervention for At Risk Parents with Learning Difficulties

The North Dakota Department of Human Services – DD Division, the North Dakota Center for Persons with Disabilities and the Pathfinder Parent Center (ND’s Parent Training and Information Center) presented this free two-day workshop, featuring Maurice Feldman, Ph.D., C.Psych., BCBA-D. The training was held at the ND Heritage Center, and Cathy Haarstad from the Pathfinder Parent Center was the coordinator.

3/23 - 3/26 2010 - MSSA 117th Annual Training Conference & Expo

The Minnesota Social Service Association held this comprehensive human service conference in Minneapolis. Anticipated attendance was more than 2800 members of private and public human service delivery system. The program was at: www.mssaconference.org/program.pdf.

 

3/26/10 - Second Annual Gertrude Weigum Hinsz Lecture Series

The NDSU Human Development and Family Science Department sponsored event featured Dr. Stephen T. Russell, Professor & Fitch Nesbitt Endowed Chair, University of Arizona. The title of Dr. Russell’s lecture was “Being Out and Gay in High School: Victimization and Young Adult Adjustment."

3/25 & 3/26 2010 - Missouri Valley Trauma Symposium

The Region VII Children's Services Coalition presented a two-day trauma symposium in Bismarck, featuring Dr. Bruce D. Perry and Mr. David Conrad. Nearly 400 people attended Bruce Perry's session entitled Therapeutic Strategies for Working With Traumatized Children: Applications for Home, School, & Clinical Work. Nearly 300 people attended David Conrad's session entitled The Cost of Caring: Secondary Traumatic Stress. This was the Symposium Brochure.

3/24/10 - Minot State University SSWO Spring Symposium

Dr. Bruce D. Perry, MD, PhD, presented on The impact of trauma on the developing child, Approximately 300 people attended the symposium. This was the Symposium Brochure.
